Yeah this is real.Needles California has some extreme meteorological events during the summer when the temperatures can reach 120 degrees. Dramatic clouds form a nice background for this Route 66 image.

Thanks Colleen, If you go down Route 66 to Needles,in the summer make sure your auto a/c is working.It is one of the three hottest spots in the US. The extreme heat makes for some wonderful cloud formations and desert highway mirages.
